What were you doing when your restaurant was doing well? That’s exactly what I want to answer for you today.

I talk to restaurant owners and operators all over the world every day. I help them improve operations and increase profits in their restaurant. One of the questions that I ask them is, “Was there a time you were doing well?” They usually answer “Yes” and then I always ask a follow up question, “What were you doing differently when you were doing well?” A common answer I get is, “I was in the restaurant more.” Okay, then you need to be there more. Another answer I get is, “We were constantly changing the specials.” Well okay, maybe you need to be doing that more. Last is, “We were advertising in this magazine, we were doing more of this, we were doing less of that, etc.” The funniest thing to me is if I’m asking about their advertising in the past, they tell me they used to do this or that. I’ll ask which one of those worked the best for you and they’ll tell me about one successful advertising tactic. Then I’ll ask, “Are you still doing that?” And they’ll say no. I don’t think I need to talk anymore here.
